Sarah Bush Lincoln Health System understands that education is a vital, lifelong process, and it is important to the development of our employees. This philosophy is what drives SBL to be informed of the latest advancements, and keeps our patients on track to have the best possible outcomes. The Nurse Extern Program is an important piece of our nursing pipeline, as we strive to grow and retain the very best nurses and to provide the best possible care to our patients.

Sarah Bush Lincoln Nurse Extern Program for student nurses is designed to expand your understanding of the dynamic role of the RN. You’ll work right alongside members of our nursing team! This experience will help you learn to act and think like a nurse, sharpen your assessment and critical-thinking skills and develop relationships with other professionals throughout the hospital.

This is a highly competitive, part- to full-time paid summer internship lasting up to eight weeks in combination with your current role. During this incredible learning experience, you will also have an opportunity to discuss unit and hospital quality initiatives and review the latest trends and initiatives in healthcare. By the end of the summer, you will understand the professional role of the registered nurse and how nurses assess and meet the needs of their patients.

The purpose of this program is to provide an entry point into nursing at SBL. Following program completion, students may transition into other positions at SBL, with the expectation that externs are planning to apply to the SBL Nurse Residency after graduation. Candidates who believe their career path lies at SBL will be preferred.

Nurse Extern Program experiences are available in our Medical & Surgical units, as well as Women’s & Children’s Center, Behavioral Health Services, Critical Care Unit, Emergency Services, and Surgical Services and other clinics as well. Externs will be able to indicate their preferences during the application process.
